The Denman Bursary , 2020
The Denman Bursary is offered every two years at Kelsall WI , and is drawn at our May meeting , when the resolutions are discussed and voted on .
The bursary is valued at five hundred pounds , and is sufficient to cover a residential course at Denman ,(formerly known as Denman College), a residential adult education college at Marcham in Oxfordshire.
The college was founded by the National Federation of Women's Institutes in 1948, and was namesd after Lady Denman, the first chairwoman of the WI Federation. Today, students attending Denman do not have to be members of the WI, and the college accepts both female and male learners. The college provides residential courses between one and four nights, although non-residential day courses are also offered.
The bursary we offer at Kelsall WI should be sufficient to cover a two or three day course , plus travel. Course subject areas include the arts, crafts, music, history , sport , technology and lifestyle. Denman is also the home of the WI cookery school. A number of our members have attended the college in previous years, studying such diverse subjects as bread making , jewellery making , Chinese silk painting, willow weaving, stone sculpture , singing , the history of Oxford, to name but a few.
