Report of our time at the County Quiz heats
On the evening of Monday 16th February, our team of enthusiastic “quizzers” arrived at Tarvin Community Centre for the first round of the annual CFWI County Quiz. Our team members were Ro Cowell, Evelyn Cragg -Hine, Janet Herdman and Anne Tonge.
By 7.30 pm, all 23 teams had arrived and were ready, pens and pencils in hand, hovering over the paper, ready for mental battle! Evelyn had spent some time on studying the First World War, and Janet had swatted up on Mozart and Beethoven, in the hope that we might get some questions on these subjects. Anne and Ro were just hoping for the best!
There were eight rounds, four before the tea break, and four after. After each round, we handed in our answer sheets and, as those were being scrutinized by the markers, we were given the correct answers. These were greeted either by a groan, a quiet cheer and a ‘well done!”, or an apology for having overruled someone’s correct answer!
At the half time break, we knew that we were in the top few. During the second half of the Quiz, we must have progressed “up the ranks”, because after round eight, we finished a creditable third equal. Norley won with 72 points; Helsby Hillside came second with 71 points, and we tied with Warmingham, with 67 points. The Norley and Helsby Hillside teams will therefore take part in the final in April.
Unfortunately for Janet and Evelyn, neither the first World War, nor Mozart or Beethoven came up, but there was a wide array of subjects that we knew something about. On the night, you either know it or you don’t, and we didn’t know quite enough to win! However, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and could report back to our members with our heads held high.

More news about the County Quiz
To their great surprise the Kelsall Quiz team of Anne Tonge, Evelyn Cragg-Hine, Janet Herdman and Ro Cowell heard that they had reached the WI County Quiz final held at Comberbach on Friday 10th April.
Despite arriving in very good time the car park was overfull so a space on the road side was found. Most of the 20 other teams were already there and a bowling match was underway on the adjacent green. A table near the refreshment hatch was chosen and we were ready! There was a delay caused by some parked cars having to be relocated.
The format was the same as for the qualifying event with 8 rounds of 10 questions.
Round 1 was general knowledge questions, not a bad start for us, but fortune was fickle and gaps in our knowledge became apparent with some blank looks and some keen (whispered) debate.
At half time tea, coffee and biscuits were served and scores so far read out - Kelsall were about middle and a collective sigh of relief- ah no pressure!
After 4 more varied rounds the last answer sheets were collected and the markers got to work while the raffle was drawn (no luck at our table) Then Jean Harding read the results which showed a tie between Frodsham and Wallasey on 64 points.
The tie-break question (In what year did Yasser Arafat become President of Palestine?) made Frodsham the winners, Wallasey runners-up with Kelsall coming sixth in a field of twenty-one teams. Feeling that we had not disgraced ourselves, we made our way contentedly home.
During the evening, it was announced that both the Queen and the Princess Royal would attend the Centenary AGM at the Royal Albert Hall in June.
