A visit to the Liverpool synagogue
A walk with a difference today as we visited the Old Hebrew Congregation Synagogue Grade 1 listed building in Toxteth Liverpool. There we were treated to a fascinating tour given by Esther Ross a very knowledgeable and entertaining member of the congregation. We learnt a lot about the Jewish way of life and the laws set out in the Pentateuch ,the first five books of the bible ,but mainly in Leviticus. All seemingly based on common sense and attention to hygiene.
The decoration of the building was outstandingly beautiful there being lots of gold leaf decoration.
It was not good to hear that security guards have to be employed on The Sabbath ,"Shabbat" to guard the cars of the congregation whilst the service is taking place ,a sad indication of the state the world is coming to in the name of religion.
Photos (below) show inside the synagogue, some artefacts used during worship and on the eve of Shabbat, including a children's scroll, and a general view of the waterfront taken from the New Museum of Liverpool Life.
