KELSALL WI KADRAS REPORT JUNE/JULY 2015
SURPRISE, SURPRISE
This is a familiar phrase that Cilla Black made famous, but on June 3rd on the day of our WI meeting we had a telephone call from the BBC inviting Kelsall WI to appear on Breakfast television. The item was to be used in their coverage of the National WI centenary. There was very little time to prepare we had to show what we could do ‘off the cuff’.
The evening was warm and sunny, the members were asked to assemble in front of Kelsall war memorial for a photograph. Three members were interviewed by Jane Cubbin. Most of the questions were about the campaigning role of the WI. We were filmed singing Jerusalem and everyone was in good voice. Members were up early on Thursday 4th to see what footage had been selected for the programme. The presenters were very complementary about our singing.
Members of the WI have been very busy attending the Centenary celebrations. On Tuesday 2nd June four members attended the Centenary Garden party at Buckingham Palace which proved to be a memorable occasion. The Duchess of Cornwall, the Duchess of Wessex and the Duchess of Gloucester were in attendance
The Centenary annual general meeting was held at the Albert hall on Thursday 4th June. Six thousand WI members were packed into the hall including three from Kelsall. The Queen attended in her role as President of Sandringham WI she was accompanied by her Royal highness the Princess Royal and Sophie, Countess of Wessex. The National Anthem and Jerusalem were sung. It was the first WI AGM to be relayed live over the internet.
On the 10th July Kelsall had their own celebration of the Centenary; they visited Stonyford Garden in beautiful sunny weather and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea which included plenty of homemade cakes!
Kelsall members supported Cheshire Federation by stewarding and helping serve refreshments in the WI marquee at the Cheshire Show. This year is the 95th birthday of the Federation as well as the National centenary. Each Institute had been asked to make banners and bunting which were used to decorate the marquee. The final display looked splendid depicting a wide range of creative ideas and skills. Footfall in the marquee was high, members of the public enjoyed a welcome rest in the refreshment area where a wide selection of foods were on offer including homemade cakes. The exhibits matched the standard of the banners and bunting, Kelsall did well in the categories they entered: - Dot Berry and Pat Symms were highly commended for their preserves and Margaret Davies came first for her watercolour depicting ‘Cheshire’s Green and Pleasant Land’.
Cheshire Federation held their 95th Birthday Party and centenary celebration at Gawsworth Hall. Cheshire’s Institutes were asked to provide entertainment. Kelsall decided to dress as Inspiring women from the 100 years in which the WI has existed. The audience had to guess who we portrayed from the way we were dressed and in some cases a few oral clues. The entertainment was well received on both days of the celebration. Gawsworth was a lovely venue, the house was very interesting and the gardens were beautiful. The Cheshire Institute’s Banners were displayed in a marquee which gave all Cheshire WI members another opportunity to admire each one at close range.
The speaker at the July meeting was Jane Higginbotham who is a butter grader. She gave us an insight into dairy products by asking the members to complete a quiz. The results were enlightening and quelled many misconceptions.
In August the committee are having a well-earned rest. The monthly meeting has been organised by the members.
If you have any interesting objects in your home you may wish to come to the meeting as a visitor and see if you own something valuable.
Do not forget to keep Saturday 12th September free. Kelsall WI are organising a village treasure hunt as part of the WI’s centenary celebrations.
