The County Quiz
First Round
On the evening of Monday the twentieth of February, a team from Kelsall attended the first round of the County Quiz, held at Tarvin Community Centre. There were twenty teams taking part, with other heats of similar size being held , during the week,in other venues throughout the county. As before, the winner and runner-up from each venue will go through to the final, together with the next highest scorers . The final will be held at Cumberbach at the beginning of April. Our team comprised Heather, Ro, Joan, and me, the writer, Anne T.
We were all ready to start punctually before the designated time of 7.30, due to everyone arriving early, as always with WI events, to be sure of a parking space! Heads down, pens in hands, full of the knowledge that we hoped would be just what was needed on the night, we were ready for battle! As we have said before many times, "you either know it or you don't ", but we always hope for the best.
As usual, there were eight rounds of ten questions each on a particular topic, and much needed sustenance of tea or coffee plus biscuit half way through the proceedings. The rounds comprised nicknames, advertisements, food, money, pot luck, capital cities, rivers and literature.
At the half-waypoint, we were lying second equal, with Christleton three points ahead. No pressure then! After round eight, we knew how many points we had, but how many did the Christleton team have? As the scores were read out, it became clear that we had won -Christleton had fallen behind - and there was a tie for second place, between Helsby Hillside and Tarvin. A tie-break question was necessary, and, in the end, it took five consecutive tie-break questions to arrive at an eventual runner-up, which was Tarvin.
Therefore, Tarvin will join Kelsall in going to the final at Cumberbach in April. A very enjoyable evening was had by everyone, and we returned home to Kelsall with our heads held high.
