OUR WALKS IN 2020 -
1 - Pre Covid 19
Due to the Covid-19 global pandemic, our normal walks ceased as we entered national lockdown on 23rd March 2020. As restrictions eased and changed throughout the year, we were able to resume our walks, albeit in an altered form. Please see photos of those walks under Main Walking Programme 2020.
Tuesday 10th March
Seven of us braved the possibility opf rain today, to join Margaret on her walk around the village of Swettenham, with the added bonus of lunch at the Swettenham Arms . This is a walk that Margaret has led before, so a few of us knew what a lovely walk we had to look forward to.
We parked by Brereton Heath Country Park , and set off past the mere , soon to arrive alongside the River Dane, which was running very high and fast, as the pictures in the following slideshow can attest. This first part of the walk was through the private land belonging to Daveport Hall, an SSSI, Site of Special Scientific Interest
Leaving behind the Davenport Hall Estate, the walk continued around the Swettenham area, for a distance of about 5 miles in total, stopping off for lunch at the aforementioned Swettenham Arms . As we approached the pub, we passed the lavender fields, which , at this time of year , are not looking their best! The same could not be said about all the daffodils which we passed, all in full bloom and making us feel that spring is finally here!
On arrival at the very attractive pub, we left our muddy boots in the lobby, and after a thoroughly enjoyable meal in front of a lovely woodburning stove, we donned our boots and retraced our steps through the Davenport Hall Estate , past the racing River Dane and back to the cars .
Thanks to Margaret for organising the day, and thanks to the drivers, Margaret and Pat, who must have been pretty tired when they got home!

Tuesday 3rd March
Today, eight of us joined Iris as she led us on a very interesrting walk around Chester, following the canals and the Rive Dee. The walk was as easy one, as it was flat, and took in parts of Chester which some of us had not seen before!
Part of our walk was through Grosvenor Park, where we were treated to a number of Willow Sculptures of birds , celebrating one hundred and fifty years of the RSPB . some of these can be seen in the slide show below. We walked along the river side the Roodee, and passed severalvery interesting lock-keepers cottages. At one pont, as we approched a lock, we were greeted by a fast flowing overflow , where there had been an error in shutting the lock gates. Luckily, the flow of water had subsied before our feet got wet!
Apart from that, we encounterd no other incidents, and very much injoyed our walk of just over five miles.

Tuesday 18th February
Following the weather last week which caused Myra's walk to be cancelled, the weather allowed our walk to go ahead today, but not at Churton as planned, as it was decided that the ground there would be too wet underfoot. Hence, Avril led us on a walk around Whitegate , similar to the walk which had been planned for last week. At some stage, we will begin to follow the planned programme , as set out on the previous page, but expect lots more changes!
We started the walk at the old Whitegate station, quickly departing from the Whitegate Way , walking over fields and through some wooded areas.Towards the end of the walk, we returned to the Whitegate Way, where we met dog walkers , cyclists (I do wish they would warn us as they approach!), and we passed an area where there had been a lot of hedge laying activity.
As expected, the ground was very muddy in places, but we experienced no rain, and all thirteen of us felt the better for the lovely walk of about four and a half miles.

Our second walk, on 11th February , was cancelled , due to the very cold weather and poor forecast. Roll on Spring!
