The Summer Afternoon Tea
The summer garden party was held on Wednesday 15th June at the home of Chris Stelfox., to whom the members are extremely grateful. To everyone’s surprise the weather was absolutely perfect, warm sunshine all afternoon, whereas for the rest of that week we endured torrential downpours. We could all sit outside at tables under large umbrellas and enjoy the beautifully tended lawn and gardens while imbibing an introductory punch tea or Buck’s fizz and admiring the plethora of ‘posh frocks’.
We were entertained by a saxophone quartet, courtesy of Jill Martin, which performed a variety of musical treats from forties swing tunes to the Beatles and finished with Land of Hope and Glory and God Save the Queen. The Queen’s ninetieth birthday was after all the excuse for this delightful event. This was followed by a substantial afternoon tea of finger-size sandwiches, scones with cream, and cakes. Well done the sub-committee! There was a special cake for Joan Jolliffe and Eileen Hesketh, both of whom also celebrate 90th birthdays this year (picture below - but click here for more!)
Finally, the raffle was drawn and we all returned home replete and warm while the clouds gathered in preparation for yet another downpour.
