Orchard Cottage Art Course
Over the last few weeks a group of WI ladies have been meeting to try their hand at sketching and painting. They had varying experiences of art but several had done no painting since leaving school. In the first sessions they were restricted to just pencils and paper with the emphasis on looking carefully at the subjects. Two sessions were spent in Margaret's garden and a third was spent in and around Tarvin Church. Marion very kindly opened up the church and the ladies surprised themselves by the quality of their work and the improvements they had made.
The following sessions saw the introduction of watercolour paints. As the ladies didn't all have paints we just used three colours French Ultramarine, Cadmium Yellow and Alizarin Crimson. Initially we mixed the three primary colours to see just how many tones and secondary colours could be made. Jill kept mixing and went on to make many wonderful colours in a chart. From there they began to make pictures.
We had a trip out to see the Autumn exhibition of the Grosvenor Art Society which was an interesting experience. We were very inspired and felt that with a bit of practice we too could aspire to exhibiting our work. Hopefully we will have some more entries in the Cheshire Show next year.
